FAQs

What are the eligibility requirements to sit for the examinations?

Q: How long is certification valid?
A: Certification is valid for a 5-year period, at which time you may become recertified.

Q: Why must nurses re-certify every 5 years?
A: Certification validates knowledge in wound, ostomy and/or continence nursing practice. Certification also shows that the nurse has met nationally recognized standards in the specialty. Demonstrating current knowledge validates professional education and experience, ultimately promoting quality patient care.

Q: Can a nurse sign CWOCN after their name if credentials have lapsed, or haven’t been earned?
A: No, our trademarked credentials must not be used if certification has lapsed or has not been earned. This is considered fraudulent use of a credential. Exams must be successfully passed in order to begin using the earned credential(s). If you are aware of fraudulent use of a WOCNCB credential, this should be reported immediately. Please visit the Credential Review & Appeals section of this website to review procedures.

Q: How do I find the exam application and instructions?
A: "Click on Become Certified / How to Apply" at the left
