Question:
Perhaps you might reconsider your requirement for BS. I have worked with MANY ADN RNs who could run circles around (clinical competence, critical thinking, etc) many of the BSNs I have worked with (and trained). It would appear you are leaving out a huge quality factor with your limitation. It is a bit odd that as a Registered Nurse, one can obtain certification as CCRN, CNOR, CHPN, etc, but you exclude them from your certification w/o Bach status? Any educational program that precedes/enables for RN licensure should certainly be good enough for wound care certification (not looking to be certified, just a bit stricken by the irony)!

Question:
I'm recognized as a Special Advisor in a publication for best practices for preventing pressure ulcers and falls. How can I use this in my PGP portfolio?

Answered September 2, 2010
If you go to pg. 12 of the current PGP handbook,it states:"Other Publications" (Best Practice document reviewer) is good for 5 points and a maximum of 15 per speciality. Thanks for your question.

Question:
I am a RN and has a BS degree but not in nursing. What kind of Bachelor degree do you have to have?

Answered September 2, 2010
I would refer you to the links on the left side of the WOCNCB website. Go to Certification and then Wound Ostomy Continence. Click on eligibility and it states," a Bachelor's degree." It doesn't state that it must be in nursing. It will guide you to how you can be come certified by checking under the link of certification. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact the WOCNCB office. Thanks for your question.

Question:
Please tell me how to establish a PGP Portfolio. I would like to get started on entering my CEUs and activities for recertification in 2012. Thank you, Joanne Asbee

Answered September 1, 2010
Joanne, I would recommend you use the "Recertification" link on the left of the WOCNCB web site. Click on the Professional Growth Program and then on the PGP Handbook and forms. This will lead you to the new PGP which is now on the computer. It has simplified and made it much easier to enter your data as you go. Your points will be immediately calculated. This will give you the ability to identify what you need to complete prior to submission of your PGP portfolio. Good luck and let us know if you have questions or comments.

Question:
Our hospital participates in P&I studies yearly, I used P&I as one of my projects earning 10 points for my last recert. period. I am the Wound care manager within our facility and this will be my 2nd time to recert using the PGP method. Can I use the P&I again for the coming recert since this is a different recert period, thanking you in advance.

Answered August 31, 2010
Yes, you can use P&I again in this recertication period. On pg. 8 of our current PGP handbook, it states you can have 5 points per study and you may count 10 points per specialty per certification period. Thanks for you question.

Question:
When filling in the "precepting a WOCN student" selection for PGP, each specialty can be utilized with the same student (ie: Wound 20 hours, Continence 20 hours, OStomy 20 hours.) ?

Answered August 31, 2010
Thanks for your question. According to our current handbook, you can have 1 point for every 4 hours of precepting and there is no maximum. Yes, you can use each category with the same student. See page 13 of the PGP handbook.

Answered August 25, 2010
We suggest that any RN can stage a wound...but if she is unsure or has questions, she should consult a CWOCN. For further questions, call our WOCN CERT. office at 888-496-2622. Thanks for your question!!

Question:
I graduated from a school of Enterotherapy and passed the certification exam in 1985. Re-certification took place in 1990. Unfortunately, My position in the hospital where I worked was eliminated in 1995. I have remained working in the GI field but not as an ostomy nurse. I have been offered a position as an WOC Nurse with the stipulation that I become re-certified within the next 6 months. Is it possible for me to purchase the necessary books and take classes on line to prepare myself for a re-certification exam? If not, could you please advise me on how I may be able to become re-certified. Thank You. Veronica Franciscus

Answered August 25, 2010
After graduating from a WOCN Education program, one has 5 years to complete the exams or prove eligibility via the Experiential Pathway. I suggest that you register ASAP for the exams, by visiting our website at WOCNCB or calling the Certification office at 888-496-2622 and ask for Kathy Meyer. For $30 per specialty, you can order a self-assessment exam with sample questions. Good Luck to You!!!
