I have an asscociates degree in nursing and work in a hospital sponsored Hospice for the last 10 years. I have done extensive training in wound care and am interested in becoming certified. Can I do this as a ADN? I am looking in to the 3 week schools at Emory and MUSC in Chareston, S.C.

Currently, a Bachelor's degree is required for certification through the WOCNCB.

Question:
Is there any research done on which of the 9 accredited schools for WOCN has students pass the board tests with the greatest percentage and highest percentage on the tests? Thanks!

Answered August 20, 2008
This information can be obtained by contacting the admission department for each of the schools. Thanks and good luck with the program of your choice!

Question:
Is the such a thing as wocn after a nurses name?

Answered August 18, 2008
The WOCNCB has worked with the ABNS and NCCA to establish proper credentials depending on the certification that a nurse obtains. A nurse which has passed all 3 areas would use the initials CWOCN-Certified Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse after her name, not WOCN. If a nurse was certified as wound and ostomy, they would use CWON-certified wound and ostomy nurse- which may be what you have seen. For a listing of all approved credentials, please visit our website at WOCNCB.org or WOCN.org. thank you for your interest.

Question:
Can I get certified, I am an LVN not yet an RN? What is the cost? Where do I get study materials?

Answered August 16, 2008
Currently you must be an RN with a BSN to sit for the wound care exam. However, the Board is exploring a unique and different credential for the LPN. This would be an opportunity for LPNs/LVNs demonstrate proficiency in wound, ostomy and/or continence nursing. Following formal classroom education and precepted clinical experience, the knowledge and skill level of the LPN/LVN will be validated by a psychometrically sound and legally defensible examination administered by the WOCNCB. The WOCN faculty at Emory offers a one day ostomy class for non BSN nurses http://www.surgery.emory.edu/wocnec/wound.manage.nurses.html However, it is not associated with the WOCNCB at this time, and does not lead to WOCNCB certification. You may also find a regional or national WOCN conference that offers teaching regarding ostomy. It is great you are interested in ostomy care, and we hope you will contact Kathy Meyer at 1-888-496-2622 for more information, and/or participation in the LPN/LVN job analysis.

Question:
I established a task force to assit in evaluating an new ostomy appliance in home care. I then decided to switch out our exsisting pouch, changed the ostomy formulary and then presented it at a product fair I have each year. DO I need to fill out a B3,a B15,and a B16? One more question,in my descision to switch out the ostomy appliance I collected a lot of data from our ostomy homecare patients, hospital CWOCN, rehab.SNIF facilities, can use this for points too??

Answered August 14, 2008
#1, Yes you will need to fill out a separate varification form for each activity. Note - on the form it states "check one activity number". #2 Data collection counts for PGP points when the activity is conducted for a research project, Cat. C, pg 21 of 2008 handbook. From the limited information above this sounds like part of your formulary project. Thank you for your questions.

Question:
Hello sir/madamn: I sent you the questions last month to if I could sit for the board exam. Because I had graduated as WOCN in Emory University since 1996. I have a great interest in sitting in the Board Examination - Wound and Stoma care nursing. But I knew that the dead line is 15th Aug. But my documentation has been being processed by my General Manager (Nursing). Can I apply for the late entry. And I will send you all documents by DHL once if it is all ready. Ivan Chi Wai HO (From Hong Kong)

Answered August 15, 2008
You can apply by Sept 15 as a "normal" late application and include the $75 late fee, without needing to submit anything different than a normal application. Good luck on your exam!

Question:
I am planning to claim points for developing and presnting a 3 part, 6 contact hour education series on "Wound Care Competncy" for staff rn's in my homecare agency. I have earned pts.in E1,E6 and E7. Do I need to compplete a separate VERIFICATION FORM for each?

Answered August 12, 2008
Since this was a 3 part presentation, I would recommend one verification form for each session and include the activities E 1, E 6 and E 7 for each session on verification forms. The reasoning being that each session would be a different competency lecture / skill. Thank you for your question.

Question:
I have worked in wound care for years and have a adn degree, how can I become wound care certified without having a BSN

Answered August 12, 2008
WOCNCB recently made the decision to not pursue offering certification for the non BSN Registered Nurse. Thank you for your interest, and good luck.
