PGP Foot Care Handbook

An Alternative for Recertifying in Foot Care Nursing

To recertify as a foot care nurse, certificants may either take the Foot Care exam or submit a typewritten portfolio via the Foot Care Professional Growth Program.

The WOCNCB established the Professional Growth Program (PGP) to recognize activities that go beyond routine practice or that represent the pathway you took from novice to expert. The PGP recertification alternative allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of foot and nail care nursing by tracking and recording evidence of your continual learning and professional growth.

Recertification is awarded based on accumulating PGP points for activities related to your professional growth. The point system is clearly outlined in the Professional Growth Program Handbook for Recertifying in Foot Care Nursing and in the interactive PGP forms.

Points are available for nine categories of activities that demonstrate you have achieved a mature level of practice and are able to apply your experience to your practice:

  • Continuing Education Units
  • Program or project development
  • Research activities
  • Publication activities
  • Presentations
  • Poster sessions
  • Precepting or clinical education
  • Involvement in professional organizations
  • Academic education

You must be currently certified, and must not have initially attempted and failed the certification exam, in order to recertify using the PGP process. Recertification is required every five years to maintain your CFCN® credential.
